The city of Denver did a study in 2008 (if I recall correctly) and found that death-row sentences cost the city thousands of dollars more per case (maybe millions??) than life sentences per case because of the trials and appeals; it took statistics based upon the fiscal impracticality of the death-row in order for the city to make efforts to stop death-row sentencing.
